Hearing loss can occur at any age and for many reasons. In adults, however, one of the most common periods for hearing loss to begin is between ages 40 and 55 years. In fact, aging and chronic exposure to loud noises are the two most significant factors that contribute to hearing loss. Other factors, such as excessive earwax, can temporarily prevent your ears from conducting sounds as well as they should.
You may not even be aware that you have a hearing impairment. Some forms of hearing loss are very mild and may only involve difficulty hearing certain sounds. Other types may occur so gradually that they progress without you even noticing.
If you suspect you may have some hearing loss, our audiologist can provide a professional hearing assessment. An audiologist is a doctoral-level healthcare professional who specializes in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating people of all ages who suffer from hearing loss or balance disorders. After your assessment, the audiologist will help prescribe a state-of-the-art solution for better hearing.
In some instances, medical or surgical treatment may be indicated, but most hearing losses are easily treated with amplification (hearing aids or assistive listening devices).
By law, physicians in New York State cannot dispense hearing aids for patients. Therefore we do not dispense hearing aids. However, by federal law, a patient must first have a physician evaluation before purchasing a hearing aid.
